Levels and progress
Wall-X has 500 stages split into 10 Levels of 50. Stages open in order and get harder as you go. To move on to the next Level it's not enough to clear stages; you also need enough stars.
How Levels unlock
Each new Level opens with the total number of stars you've collected so far. With the current setting, Level 2 needs 100 stars, Level 3 needs 200, and each Level adds another 100. Level 10 needs 900 stars in total.
What that means: a Level has 50 stages and at most 150 stars. To unlock the next one you need an average of 100 stars per Level, so an average of 2 stars per stage. Clear every stage with a single star and you'll get stuck at some point. The good news is that you can make up missing stars anywhere: settle for 1 star on a hard stage and take 3 on an easy one to balance it out.
What each Level brings
Level 1: the basics
Something new every five stages: ramp, spring, booster, spikes, pits, pipes, gates, wind and the wall behind the ball. You also meet the space, desert, polar and forest themes for the first time.
Level 2: new obstacles
Again something new every five stages: the reverse booster, triangles, no-draw zones, rubber blocks, magnetic floors, sticky floors, pistons and the ceiling target.
Levels 3–10: everything together
From here all tools and obstacles are mixed and stages are ordered by difficulty. Each Level has 8–10 themed stages. Later Levels add new theme elements too: trees in the forest, drifting meteors in space and, from Level 6, black holes.
Every stage from Level 3 on was measured by computer before being added: each obstacle in a stage has a real job, and none that could be removed without making the stage easier was left in. If an obstacle looks pointless to you, it's probably there to block the easiest solution.
The daily stage
Every day everyone plays the same stage. Players who clear it are ranked by the least ink used. Normal stages have a least-ink ranking too: when you clear one you see where you placed.
